Commander: Temporary Acting Lt Cdr C. Mc. V. Crichton, RNVR
Vessel Type: Landing Craft Tank Mk III
The 14th LCT Flotilla were part of E Squadron in Assault Group S3. Their eight LCTs were part of Group 1 and carried 38 DD tanks of the 13/18 Hussars to Sword Beach on D-Day.
The flotilla embarked their tanks on D-2 which, owing to the 24 hour cancellation, was on the 3rd June. Between 3pm and 7pm the LCTs were berthed at Embarkation Hard G1 in Stokes Bay, a hard that had been used for DD training since the start of the year.
The flotilla moored in Anchorage 27, just around the coast from Stokes Bay on the east side of Gilkicker Point, between the point and the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour. At 1210 on the 5th June, the flotilla weighted anchor and joined sailing group S3.
The flotilla arrived at the lowering position on time and sailed forwards at 0520 on the morning of the 6th. Although originally intended to launch the tanks 7000 yards form the beach, the decision was made to close to 6000 and then 5000 yards.
Almost all of the tanks were launched. However LCT 465’s bow door was damaged as the fourth tank launched and the fifth tank had to remain on board and return to England. LCT 467’s leading tank’s canvas skirt was damaged and so the LCT beached at 0805, unloading its four tanks directly onto the beach.
After the tanks had been launched, LCT 461 was employed in tasks off the beaches, whilst the rest of the flotilla returned to the UK.
